USDCAD Sees Gains Amid U.S. Dollar Strength and Trade Tensions

The USDCAD currency pair has shown upward movement as the trading week concludes, buoyed by a cluster of moving-average support. The pair found buying interest near its 200-day moving average at 1.38323 and the 200-hour moving average at 1.38258. This convergence of significant moving averages creates a defined risk level for traders, allowing them to measure their positions more effectively.

Despite the rebound, USDCAD faced resistance at a downward-sloping trendline that has repelled buyers on five occasions. This trendline, which connects highs from July, late July, early August, and early September, remains a critical barrier. For buyers to gain control, they must surpass this trendline and maintain levels above the 50% retracement point at 1.38663. Failure to do so could reinforce the bearish outlook for the pair.

The recent rise in USDCAD is attributed to renewed strength in the U.S. dollar, following inflation data that heightened expectations for a potential interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve. Higher U.S. rates typically enhance the attractiveness of dollar-denominated assets. Conversely, the Canadian dollar has struggled despite high oil prices, which usually bolster the currency due to Canada's status as a major energy exporter. Ongoing trade tensions between the U.S. and Canada, including new tariffs and retaliatory measures, have further complicated the economic landscape, leading to increased uncertainty for Canadian exports and investment.
