Bank of Japan Expected to Maintain Interest Rates Amid Inflation Forecast Upgrade

The Bank of Japan (BOJ) is anticipated to slightly revise its inflation forecast for the fiscal year 2027 during its upcoming meeting on October 30, 2026, as rising oil prices continue to influence consumer prices. Despite this potential adjustment, the central bank is expected to keep interest rates steady at 1.25%, following a rate hike in September. Market analysts indicate that there is virtually no expectation of another rate increase next week, although the outlook for December appears more uncertain, with traders assigning a 73% probability of a rate change by the end of the year.

Policymakers at the BOJ believe that underlying price pressures remain stable, with limited signs of a widespread wage-price spiral. This suggests that the central bank is not overly concerned about runaway inflation at this time. The BOJ is likely to use the upcoming meeting to assess the impact of the previous rate hike, allowing them some flexibility in their decision-making process.

However, the situation remains complex. Higher oil prices and the risk of further depreciation of the yen could sustain elevated levels of imported inflation. If these pressures begin to influence broader price expectations, the BOJ may face challenges if it delays necessary policy adjustments. While raising interest rates may not directly address supply issues, such as oil availability, the effectiveness of intervention strategies for the yen has been called into question. As a result, the BOJ's ability to maintain its current stance in the coming months will be closely monitored by market participants.
