Bitcoin Reaches Eight-Month High Amid Short Squeeze and Profit-Taking

Bitcoin surged to an eight-month high, surpassing $87,000 on September 21, driven by a significant short squeeze that liquidated approximately $648 million in bearish positions. This rally followed a low of around $74,913 on September 15, coinciding with the U.S. Senate's failure to advance the CLARITY Act and a 25 basis point interest rate increase by the Federal Reserve on September 16. Despite the recent gains, Bitcoin remains about 32% below its all-time high of nearly $126,000, reached in October 2025.

Crypto analyst Ted Pillows announced on social media that he sold his last Bitcoin at $85,000, citing a rise in fear of missing out (FOMO) among traders. He indicated that his group had previously accumulated Bitcoin in the $58,000 to $62,000 range. While he acknowledged the potential for further price increases, he expressed caution, stating that he expects a retracement towards the mid-$70,000s unless Bitcoin maintains multiple daily and weekly closes above $83,000.

The market sentiment has shifted towards greed, with the Fear and Greed Index reaching 77, indicating increased optimism among investors. Open interest in Bitcoin derivatives has also risen by about 7.6%, reaching approximately $156 billion, suggesting that traders are leveraging their positions rather than withdrawing from the market. Analysts will be closely monitoring whether spot demand, including inflows into U.S.-listed digital asset exchange-traded funds (ETFs), can sustain the rally as the effects of the short squeeze begin to fade.
