CoreWeave (CRWV) Raises GPU Prices 35% as $104 Billion Backlog Signals Tight AI Capacity
Key Takeaways
- Karl Keirstead, a UBS analyst ranked #357 among 12,504 analysts, maintains his Buy rating on CoreWeave with a $120 price target.
- The AI infrastructure company implemented a 25% GPU hosting price increase in July, followed by an additional 10% hike in subsequent months.
- CoreWeave’s revenue backlog approached $104 billion before incorporating over $25 billion in fresh Q3 customer commitments.
- Analyst consensus leans Moderate Buy on CRWV stock with a $138.78 average target price, suggesting substantial potential gains.
- Company insiders have divested over 6.4 million shares valued at approximately $557.7 million during the past three months.
Shares of CoreWeave (CRWV) began Friday’s session at $89.62, trading significantly beneath the stock’s 52-week peak of $153.20. Yet the AI cloud infrastructure specialist continues making strategic moves that are capturing analyst attention across Wall Street.
CoreWeave, Inc. Class A Common Stock, CRWV
Karl Keirstead, a five-star analyst at UBS who ranks #357 among 12,504 tracked analysts, maintains a Buy recommendation on the shares with a $120 valuation target. His investment thesis hinges on a straightforward observation: CoreWeave continues implementing price increases, and clients continue accepting them.
In July, the company boosted hourly pricing for Nvidia GPU hosting by 25%. Between two and three months later, it layered on another 10% rate adjustment.
Such aggressive pricing behavior rarely occurs in markets with abundant supply. The moves signal that AI computational resources remain scarce and highly sought after.
According to CoreWeave, short-duration contracts executed during Q3 generated approximately $40 million in annualized revenue per megawatt. This substantial figure underscores the ongoing capacity constraints in the AI infrastructure sector.
Unprecedented Revenue Commitments Continue Building
At the close of June, the company reported a revenue backlog hovering around $104 billion. Remarkably, this massive figure excluded an additional $25 billion-plus in customer commitments secured early in Q3.
According to UBS, this upward pricing trajectory isn’t isolated to CoreWeave. The investment bank sees similar dynamics playing out throughout the AI infrastructure landscape.
However, a critical challenge remains: can providers actually construct sufficient capacity to satisfy this explosive demand? Community resistance to data center development poses one significant obstacle, with local populations expressing concerns about energy usage and construction impacts.
Keirstead notes that industry intelligence suggests well-capitalized operators possess the capabilities to navigate these regulatory and logistical challenges. Capital availability presents its own complexities, however.
Building AI-focused data centers requires enormous upfront investment before revenue generation begins. CoreWeave recently completed a $3.7 billion convertible note offering maturing in 2033, expanded from the initially planned $3 billion, with a 2.875% coupon rate.
Additionally, the company established an at-the-market equity program permitting sales of up to 35 million shares to maintain capital flexibility.
Financial Performance and Street Expectations
CoreWeave released quarterly earnings on August 11. The firm delivered an adjusted loss of $1.14 per share, outperforming analyst expectations of a $1.52 loss.
Quarterly revenue reached $2.58 billion, representing 112% year-over-year expansion. Despite impressive top-line growth, the company recorded a negative 47.95% return on equity and a negative 25.41% net margin.
Multiple investment banks have revised their outlooks recently. Citigroup increased its price objective to $159, JPMorgan upgraded shares to overweight with a $125 target, and Wells Fargo elevated its forecast to $160.
The Street consensus registers as Moderate Buy, featuring a $138.78 average price target derived from 23 Buy ratings, nine Hold recommendations, and three Sell opinions.
Conversely, company insiders have been actively reducing positions. CEO Michael Intrator divested 200,000 shares in July at $78.23 per share, while significant shareholder Magnetar Financial offloaded more than 307,000 shares in August.
Collectively, insiders have sold in excess of 6.4 million shares totaling around $557.7 million over the last 90 days. CoreWeave currently carries a $41.12 billion market capitalization alongside a 5.53 debt-to-equity ratio.
