Japan’s SMBC Nikko Securities Partners with Uniswap (UNI) Labs to Build Compliant DeFi Gateway by 2027
Key Highlights
- UNI is currently trading at $8.91, gaining 0.65% as Bitcoin surpasses the $86,000 threshold.
- Japan’s third-largest brokerage firm, SMBC Nikko Securities, has entered into an agreement with Uniswap Labs, Base, and Nyx Foundation to develop a regulatory-compliant DeFi Gateway.
- Open interest for Uniswap currently stands at $915 million, marking a modest decline from September’s peak of $971 million.
- Technical analysis reveals UNI potentially forming a cup-and-handle configuration with key resistance around $10.30.
- Market observers are monitoring a falling wedge formation on shorter timeframes, suggesting a potential breakout toward $11.50.
At press time, Uniswap (UNI) is changing hands at $8.91, reflecting a 0.65% increase for the session. This uptick aligns with broader cryptocurrency market strength, particularly as Bitcoin reclaims the $86,000 level.

While the daily gain appears modest, the momentum shift coincides with significant institutional developments from Japan. SMBC Nikko Securities, ranking as Japan’s third-largest securities firm, has formalized a memorandum of understanding with Uniswap Labs, the Base network, and Nyx Foundation.
This collaboration aims to construct a DeFi Gateway specifically designed for Japanese market participants. The platform will leverage Uniswap v4 Hooks technology to establish liquidity pools that comply with Japan’s stringent anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing regulations.
Mid-2027 Target Date for SMBC Initiative
The consortium has established mid-2027 as its planned deployment timeline. Throughout development, the project team will maintain regular communication with Japanese regulatory authorities, most notably the Financial Services Agency.
Blockchain infrastructure firm Nethermind announced it will share technical leadership responsibilities with SMBC Nikko. The firm’s contribution will encompass engineering development, artificial intelligence integration, and smart contract auditing.
The partnership also includes Base, the Ethereum layer-2 scaling solution developed by Coinbase. This integration establishes a direct connection between the Japanese initiative and one of America’s leading cryptocurrency exchanges.
This announcement aligns with predictions made by Standard Chartered approximately four months prior. The banking institution projected that Uniswap’s total value locked could multiply 37-fold by 2030, while UNI token price might experience a 40x increase over a four-year horizon.
According to CoinGlass analytics, Uniswap’s open interest climbed from $491 million in mid-September to reach $971 million by the end of that month. Current figures show a slight retreat to $915 million.
The funding rate for UNI perpetual contracts remains in positive territory, indicating that long position holders are paying fees to maintain their exposure. However, Binance’s long-to-short ratio has declined from 1.86 to 1.57, suggesting some leveraged bulls have reduced positions.
Technical Indicators Highlight Critical Price Zones
Daily chart analysis reveals UNI potentially developing a cup-and-handle formation. The pattern’s resistance level is positioned around $10.30, representing approximately 15% upside from current levels.
The MACD indicator has recently crossed beneath its signal line, implying the momentum from September’s advance may be fading. The Relative Strength Index registers 60.27, maintaining position above the 50 neutral threshold but below recent averages.
Liquidation data from CoinGlass highlights concentration zones near $8.85 on the downside and $9.35 above current price. A move below $8.85 could catalyze cascading liquidations of leveraged long positions.
Technical analyst eam LAMBO Charts posted on X that UNI “looks like it wants to make the chart ugly for bears,” highlighting a clear structural shift with $11 representing the subsequent target.
Meanwhile, analyst Crypto With Gopal identified a falling wedge pattern on the 1-hour timeframe. Gopal noted price compression between $8.50 and $10, with a breakout above the wedge’s upper trendline potentially targeting $11.50.
Additionally, analyst CW observed that UNI’s net position delta has been expanding during recent sideways price action, interpreting this as evidence of strengthening bullish momentum.
For the immediate term, UNI must recapture the $9.16 level and push through $9.35 resistance to establish favorable conditions for challenging the $10.30 zone.
