OpenAI Hires Former White House Cyber Official as Regulators Probe AI Dangers

The former leader of artificial intelligence policy at the White House’s Office of the National Cyber Director, Thomas Lind, joined OpenAI, The Information reported Friday (Oct. 2), citing the head of OpenAI’s national security policy team.

Lind joined OpenAI this week and will lead cyber and strategic risk on the firm’s national security policy team, according to the report.

Lind served at ONCD from April 2025 to June 2026, most recently as head of policy and senior advisor to the director, according to his LinkedIn profile.

OpenAI’s national security policy team is led by Sasha Baker, former deputy undersecretary of defense for policy during the President Joe Biden administration, according to the report.

Baker told The Information, per the report: “Tom is a key addition to our national security team, bringing expertise across AI policy, cybersecurity and strategic risk. His hire reflects OpenAI’s continued investment in addressing the national security challenges of increasingly capable AI and ensuring this technology is used to benefit and protect the country. His expertise is even more important as AI becomes central to the national security agenda, with the Office of National Cyber Director playing a growing role in shaping AI policy.”

Politico reported in June that Lind was planning to leave ONCD to spend more time with his family. The report said there had been a string of departures of White House tech policy leaders after President Donald Trump signed an AI executive order on June 2.

Nextgov/FCW reported Aug. 6 that Lind said during a panel discussion at a conference that the rapid proliferation of AI cyber tools beyond governments and large firms had drastically reduced the response times available to policymakers and defenders.

Reuters reported Wednesday (Sept. 30) that OpenAI is among the leading AI developers that are facing an investigation by the Federal Trade Commission that is focused on the potential dangers AI poses to consumers.

A senior commission official said in the report that the incident in which OpenAI agents probed the AI coding hub Hugging Face for vulnerabilities before carrying out a large-scale attack led to added urgency around the issue.
