Ethereum (ETH) Price Eyes $2,800 Breakout as Inflation Data Eases Fed Pressure

      Key Highlights

      • Ethereum surged past $2,700 on September 30 but retreated to approximately $2,679.
      • August PCE inflation registered at 3.4%, undershooting the anticipated 3.7%.
      • Probability of a Fed rate increase at October’s meeting plunged from 67% to 34%.
      • Ethereum ETF products experienced $2.81 million in withdrawals on September 29, breaking a seven-consecutive-day influx pattern.
      • ETH maintains trading above its 200-day EMA positioned at $2,462 while challenging the $2,816 resistance threshold.

Ethereum pushed beyond the $2,700 threshold on September 30 following unexpectedly mild US inflation figures. However, the cryptocurrency couldn’t sustain these gains, subsequently declining to $2,679.

This price action occurred in response to fresh Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) data, which serves as the Federal Reserve’s primary inflation measurement tool. August’s reading registered at 3.4%, falling short of the 3.7% consensus estimate.

The core PCE metric similarly underperformed expectations, landing 10 basis points beneath analyst forecasts. These figures indicate moderating inflationary pressures, despite readings continuing to exceed the Federal Reserve’s 2% benchmark.

Dramatic Decline in Rate Hike Probability

The milder inflation numbers significantly altered market expectations regarding Federal Reserve policy. Data from the CME FedWatch Tool reveals that the likelihood of a 25 basis point rate increase at the October 28 gathering plummeted from 67% to 34%.

Reduced rate hike probabilities typically benefit risk-oriented assets such as Ethereum. FXEmpire analyst Alejandro Arrieche observed that the majority of market participants no longer anticipate a hike at the upcoming FOMC session.

Alternative perspectives emerged as well. Analyst Ash Crypto highlighted on X that $ETH recorded its strongest monthly close of 2026 and achieved its most successful third quarter in the cryptocurrency’s entire history, describing the performance as “absolutely massive.”

This observation coincided with trading activity and blockchain metrics suggesting renewed accumulation. Santiment analytics indicate Ethereum’s MVRV ratio moved into positive territory for the first time since July 2025, a threshold that has historically signaled subsequent price advances.

Ethereum ETF Activity Presents Conflicting Signals

Spot Ethereum ETF products registered $2.81 million in net withdrawals on September 29. This development concluded a seven-consecutive-day period of capital inflows and represented the first outflow day since September 18.

Ethereum stood as the sole cryptocurrency ETF segment experiencing outflows on that particular day. Notwithstanding this single-day reversal, Ethereum ETF products have accumulated $892 million throughout September, extending the net inflow streak to three consecutive months.

From a technical perspective, Ethereum continues trading above its 200-day exponential moving average (EMA), presently situated at $2,462. Market technicians consider this threshold as crucial demarcation between bullish and bearish long-term trajectories.

The immediate resistance level for ETH stands at $2,816. Breaching this barrier could establish a pathway toward the psychologically significant $3,000 milestone, per technical commentary from CoinGape.

Momentum measurements, including the Awesome Oscillator, display expanding green bars. This configuration generally supports expectations for continued upward price action.

Certain market observers anticipate a potential correction first. FXEmpire’s technical assessment suggests ETH might retrace toward the $2,400 to $2,500 zone before continuing higher, echoing a sequence observed in 2025 following the Pectra network enhancement.

That upgrade cycle is being referenced in relation to the forthcoming Glamsterdam upgrade, scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026. Network developers characterize it as a comparable technical catalyst for the blockchain.

Assuming current momentum persists and capital flows continue, several projections position Ethereum’s subsequent target range between $3,000 and $3,400 within the next four to eight weeks.

As of October 1, Ethereum was changing hands at $2,711.54, reflecting a 1.49% daily increase.
