U.S. Layoff Announcements Decrease Significantly in September

In September 2026, U.S. employers reported a total of 43,281 job cuts, marking an 18% decrease from the previous month and the lowest number of layoffs for that month since 2022, as reported by Challenger Gray. This decline in layoffs reflects a broader trend, with year-to-date job cuts down 39% compared to 2025.

Despite the overall reduction in layoffs, the technology sector experienced a notable increase, with job cuts rising by 77% month-over-month. Additionally, hiring announcements in September were the weakest recorded since 2011, indicating potential challenges in the labor market despite the overall decrease in layoffs.
