Ethereum (ETH) Surges Past $2,200 in Dramatic Short Squeeze Rally
Key Highlights
- ETH surpassed the $2,200 threshold on August 19, marking its first time above this level since June 2, 2026
- The cryptocurrency posted an impressive 8% increase within a 24-hour period, touching an intraday peak close to $2,103
- BTC’s rally toward $70,000 sparked massive liquidations exceeding $1.23 billion in short positions
- Ethereum spot ETFs attracted $71.47 million in net daily inflows
- The Relative Strength Index for ETH reached 87.41, indicating extreme overbought conditions
On Wednesday, Ethereum shattered the $2,200 barrier for the first time since early June 2026. This significant price movement occurred alongside a widespread cryptocurrency market surge that propelled Bitcoin toward the $70,000 mark and sparked extensive short position liquidations throughout the digital asset space.

The trading session began with ETH hovering around $1,905 before experiencing a powerful upward thrust that carried it to an intraday peak near $2,103. By session’s end, the cryptocurrency had stabilized around $2,080, marking an approximately 8% appreciation over the previous 24-hour period.
This upward momentum received support from the US Treasury’s announcement to expand long-term bond buyback programs. Market participants interpreted this policy shift as an enhancement to overall liquidity conditions, providing a tailwind for Bitcoin and other higher-risk assets.
BTC rocketed past the $68,000 threshold and climbed to nearly $69,700, representing its strongest performance in over two months. Bitcoin accumulated approximately $4,400 in value during a compressed 50-minute window as market participants scrambled to exit bearish bets.
Data from CoinGlass reveals that roughly $1.55 billion worth of short positions were wiped out within a single 60-minute period. Throughout the entire 24-hour cycle, aggregate liquidations across cryptocurrency markets approached $2.99 billion, ensnaring approximately 114,038 individual traders.

The most substantial individual liquidation involved a $32.18 million ETHUSDT perpetual contract on the Bitget exchange. Alternative cryptocurrencies including Solana, BNB, Dogecoin, and Cardano all experienced upward price movement as market sentiment turned positive.
Institutional Capital Flows Through ETF Vehicles
Exchange-traded funds focused on spot Ethereum registered $71.47 million in net positive flows during the trading session. Cumulative ETF holdings climbed to $10.83 billion, signaling sustained institutional appetite for ETH exposure.
The persistent demand through ETF channels provides a more sustainable foundation for price appreciation compared to rallies fueled exclusively by derivatives market dynamics.
Open interest in Ethereum derivatives contracts surged by nearly 10% in fewer than 24 hours. This metric demonstrates that leveraged market participants were actively establishing new positions as prices breached key resistance levels.
Market analyst Daan Crypto Trades commented on X that the substantial daily candlestick pattern concluding the consolidation phase reminded him of similar price action “from last year.” He observed that when a comparable candlestick formation emerged previously, valuations climbed an additional 20% during the subsequent two-day period, while emphasizing this was an observation rather than a forecast.
Critical Support and Resistance Zones
ETH powered through the $1,960, $2,000, and $2,050 levels within a single candlestick before encountering selling pressure near $2,100.
The Relative Strength Index registered 87.41, positioning ETH well into overbought territory. Meanwhile, the Chaikin Money Flow indicator printed 0.62, confirming robust capital accumulation supporting the price advance.
A confirmed four-hour candle close above $2,100 could establish a foundation for movement toward $2,120 and subsequently $2,160. A volume-supported breach of $2,160 would bring the $2,200 psychological level into immediate consideration.
Ethereum has registered a 31.1% gain during Q3 2026, effectively reversing its 25.3% loss from Q2. This performance trajectory positions ETH for its first quarterly gain of the current year.
Total assets held in spot ETF vehicles reached $10.83 billion at the conclusion of the trading session.
