European Stock Markets Close Mostly Lower Amid Middle East Tensions

Major European stock indices closed mostly lower on October 20, 2026, as traders reacted to ongoing developments in the Middle East. The DAX in Germany fell by 13.02 points, or 0.05%, ending at 25,306.76. France's CAC experienced a decline of 29.56 points, or 0.38%, closing at 7,838.50. The UK's FTSE 100 dropped by 31.71 points, or 0.29%, to finish at 10,732.99, while Italy's FTSE MIB decreased by 14.92 points, or 0.03%, to close at 49,071.36. In contrast, Spain's Ibex was the only index to gain, rising by 53.10 points, or 0.28%, to reach 19,092.39.

Market volatility was largely driven by fluctuating sentiments surrounding US-Iran negotiations. Initial optimism stemmed from a report suggesting a compromise proposal involving confidential visits to Iranian nuclear facilities and the release of $6 billion in frozen Iranian funds, which reportedly had US approval. However, subsequent reports indicated that while talks were ongoing, expectations for an imminent deal were overly optimistic, leading to a rebound in oil prices and a decline in stock market gains.

European bond yields also reflected the uncertain economic landscape, with benchmark 10-year yields decreasing across several countries. Germany's yield fell to 3.397%, while France's was at 4.921%. Meanwhile, economic data from Germany showed a rise in producer prices by 1.9% month-over-month, surpassing estimates, but consumer confidence weakened, indicating potential inflationary pressures alongside declining economic sentiment. This mixed economic outlook adds to the challenges facing European markets.
