European Stock Markets Decline as Bond Yields Rise

Major European stock indices closed lower on October 19, 2026, with all five major markets experiencing declines of over 1%. Italy's FTSE MIB led the downturn, falling by 1.55% to close at 49,086.28 points, while Spain's Ibex dropped 1.49% to 19,039.30 points. Germany's DAX fell by 1.18% to 25,319.78 points, France's CAC decreased by 1.11% to 7,868.06 points, and the UK's FTSE 100 declined by 1.08% to 10,764.70 points. This downward trend followed a week of gains, indicating a shift in market sentiment.

The rise in European bond yields contributed to the stock market decline, with France's 10-year yield increasing by 8.6 basis points to 4.940%, the highest level since May 2002. Germany's 10-year yield also rose, reaching 3.456%. The widening yield spread between French and German bonds reflects investor concerns ahead of a crucial budget vote in the French National Assembly scheduled for October 20, which will assess the government's fiscal consolidation plans.

In contrast, US stock markets showed signs of recovery, particularly in technology shares, with the Nasdaq Composite rising by 1.47% to 26,523.44 points. The Dow Jones Industrial Average remained nearly unchanged, while the S&P 500 increased by 0.64%. US Treasury yields also rose, with the benchmark 10-year yield reaching 5.138%. Meanwhile, the US housing market index indicated ongoing challenges for builders, as sentiment remained below the neutral level of 50.
