Federal Reserve Faces Inflation Pressure as Diesel Costs Rise

Recent data from the Federal Reserve indicates that inflation pressures in the United States are broadening, with significant contributions from rising diesel fuel costs. Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee described the September Consumer Price Index (CPI) data as discouraging, noting a 3.7% increase in consumer prices over the past year, well above the Fed's target of 2%. The Fed's Beige Book survey highlighted that price growth is intensifying in several regions, with diesel costs being the most frequently cited factor affecting various industries, including freight and agriculture.

Goolsbee expressed concern about services inflation, which remains above 5%, and emphasized that this trend cannot be solely attributed to external factors such as tariffs or oil prices. He pointed out that businesses across the Midwest are reporting rising costs, suggesting that demand-driven inflation could become a persistent issue if not addressed. While he did not specify how the Fed should respond in the immediate term, he acknowledged the central bank's responsibility to prevent overheating in the economy.

The Beige Book revealed that three of the Fed's districts reported robust price growth, while eight described it as moderate, with some indicating intensifying pressures. Diesel fuel was mentioned 21 times in the latest report, a significant increase from previous surveys. The labor market remains stable, with low hiring and firing rates, although some firms are reducing staff by not replacing departing workers. Rising mortgage rates are also impacting the housing market, pushing potential buyers out and hindering existing homeowners from moving.
