Federal Reserve President Signals Caution on Interest Rate Hikes

Mary Daly, President of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, indicated that further interest rate increases are likely necessary to combat inflation, but she sees no immediate need for action at the upcoming meeting scheduled for October 27-28. In an interview, Daly emphasized the importance of making thoughtful decisions based on comprehensive information rather than rushing into a response to recent economic data.

Daly's comments follow the release of September consumer price index data, which revealed an inflation rate of 3.7% year-over-year, exceeding expectations and remaining significantly above the Fed's target of 2%. She noted that rising gasoline prices are a major contributor to this headline inflation, while core inflation remains persistently high. Despite the elevated risks of inflation staying above target, Daly expressed confidence in the stability of the labor market, allowing the Fed to prioritize price stability.

The remarks come amid differing views among Federal Reserve officials regarding the timing of future rate hikes. While Daly advocates for a cautious approach, Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee described the recent inflation data as discouraging, highlighting ongoing pressures in the services sector. The Fed had previously raised its target range to 3.75% to 4% in September and indicated that December is more likely for the next increase, aligning with Daly's perspective.
