GCC-EU summit postponed after Houthis attack Saudi Arabia

A summit between the Gulf Cooperation Council and European Union planned for this month in Riyadh has been postponed as the Iran-aligned Yemeni Houthi militia steps up strikes against civilian targets in Saudi Arabia.

The six-country GCC and the European Council confirmed the delay in separate statements.

Riyadh’s main airport has been shut since October 10, when a Houthi missile strike killed 13 people and wounded more than 300. Attacks continued the following day, with authorities reporting strikes on airports in Riyadh and Dammam.

A new date for the summit, which was scheduled for October 24 in the Saudi capital, will be announced in due course, the statements said.

GCC secretary-general Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi said the rescheduling was necessary due to Houthi attempts to target Saudi civilian locations and the extended suspension of flights at King Khalid International Airport.

The EU said its partnership with the GCC is of great strategic importance to both regions. The two organisations have sought a free trade agreement for decades, since talks began in 1990.

The 27-country EU is the GCC’s second-largest trading partner, with bilateral goods transactions reaching $193 billion last year.

“The EU remains committed to deepening this partnership and sustaining the momentum built since the first summit in October 2024,” it added.

The Houthis hit an administrative building at the headquarters of state oil giant Saudi Aramco this week and warned global airlines to halt operations in the Gulf state.
