Gold Prices Decline Amid Rising Oil Prices and Anticipation of US CPI Report

Gold prices have faced downward pressure due to a significant increase in oil prices, with West Texas Intermediate (WTI) reaching a new weekly high. This surge is attributed to escalating tensions in the Middle East, particularly intensified attacks by Houthi forces on Saudi Arabia, which have raised concerns over potential supply disruptions. Additionally, ongoing negotiations between the United States and Iran remain unresolved, and the conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to affect energy markets, as Russia reportedly targeted an oil facility in western Ukraine.

The current geopolitical climate has kept oil prices elevated, which, combined with persistent inflationary pressures, has limited the upside for gold. Market participants are closely watching the upcoming US Consumer Price Index (CPI) report, particularly the core month-over-month measure, as it will influence the Federal Reserve's decisions on interest rate hikes. Currently, the probability of a rate increase in October stands at approximately 21%, with traders awaiting the CPI data to clarify the Fed's policy direction.

A rise in the core CPI to 0.4% could trigger a selloff in gold as markets adjust to a more hawkish outlook from the Fed, while a figure in line with or below expectations might lead to a temporary rally in the precious metal. Technical analysis indicates that gold has struggled to reach its downward trendline, with sellers likely to target lower levels, while buyers are looking for a breakout to initiate a rally. Today's CPI report, along with upcoming data on Producer Price Index (PPI), retail sales, and jobless claims, will be critical in shaping market sentiment.
