Goldman Sachs Signals Potential RBA Rate Hike Following Hawkish Minutes

Goldman Sachs has indicated that the minutes from the Reserve Bank of Australia’s (RBA) September policy meeting have lowered the threshold for a potential interest rate hike in November. While Goldman still anticipates that the RBA will maintain the cash rate at 4.60% during its next meeting, the economists believe that the upcoming third-quarter consumer price index (CPI) report will be crucial in determining whether the RBA will proceed with a rate increase.

The minutes revealed increased concerns regarding domestic capacity pressures and acknowledged that July’s stronger-than-expected inflation data supported this view. Goldman noted that the board unanimously raised rates by 25 basis points during the September meeting, citing several inflationary risks, including rising oil prices due to geopolitical tensions and cost pressures from advancements in artificial intelligence.

The RBA's upcoming decision will follow the release of the third-quarter CPI report on October 28, which is expected to provide insights into underlying inflation trends. A robust CPI reading could strengthen expectations for a rate hike, as the board has expressed a willingness to adjust rates further if necessary. The next RBA meeting is scheduled for November 3, where updated economic forecasts will also be presented.
