People’s Bank of China to Set USD/CNY Reference Rate at 6.6922

The People’s Bank of China (PBOC) is scheduled to announce the daily USD/CNY reference rate at approximately 0115 GMT on October 14, 2026. This fixing is a key indicator in Asian foreign exchange markets and is closely monitored by investors and analysts alike.

China operates a managed floating exchange rate system, allowing the renminbi (yuan) to trade within a specified band around a central reference rate established by the PBOC each trading day. The current band permits the currency to fluctuate by plus or minus 2% from the official midpoint during onshore trading hours. The PBOC determines this midpoint based on various factors, including the previous day's closing price, movements in major currencies, and domestic economic conditions.

Market analysts, including those from Goldman Sachs, suggest that the yuan is undervalued by as much as 25%, indicating that the market may not fully appreciate the potential for the currency to strengthen. The daily fixing is often interpreted as a policy signal, with a stronger midpoint suggesting the PBOC's intent to counter depreciation pressures, while a weaker fixing may reflect a willingness to allow the currency to soften in response to external and internal economic challenges.
