UBS Projects 28% Earnings Growth for S&P 500 in Q3 Driven by AI and Cyclical Demand

UBS has forecasted a significant earnings per share growth of approximately 28% for S&P 500 companies in the third quarter of 2026, attributing this optimism to rising artificial intelligence (AI) spending, robust cyclical demand, and resilient consumer behavior. The bank anticipates that AI-related expenditures will surge by over 80% this year, reaching around $900 billion, with semiconductor firms expected to contribute nearly half of the earnings growth for the index during this period.

Despite a recent downturn in technology stocks and a nearly 3% drop in the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index, UBS remains confident that the upcoming earnings season will provide a boost to US equities. The bank highlights that hyperscaler cloud revenue is projected to grow by close to 60% year-on-year in the quarter, indicating a strong demand for cloud services and AI applications.

While higher energy costs pose challenges for freight-dependent retailers and travel companies, UBS believes the overall impact on profits will be limited. The bank also notes that the labor market remains strong, with initial jobless claims at multi-decade lows, which should support consumer spending. Additionally, UBS considers the rising borrowing costs manageable, as most non-financial S&P 500 companies have long-term debt maturities, mitigating the immediate effects of increased interest rates.
