Oil Prices Mixed Amid Geopolitical Tensions and Supply Concerns

Oil prices experienced a mixed settlement on October 12, 2026, as the market reacted to conflicting signals regarding supply and geopolitical tensions. Brent crude futures closed at approximately $106 per barrel, down nearly $1 or about 1%, after reaching their highest level since mid-September on the previous day. Meanwhile, US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) rose by about 40 cents to settle at around $94, marking its strongest close since late September.

The fluctuations in oil prices come as a potential US-Russia diesel export deal raises hopes for increased supply from Russia, which could alleviate some pressure on the market. However, this optimism is tempered by escalating conflicts in the Middle East, particularly the ongoing Saudi-Houthi war, which poses risks to Gulf energy infrastructure. Reports of loud booms near Saudi Aramco's headquarters in Dhahran have heightened concerns, with sources indicating that the building may have been struck, prompting an evacuation order.

OPEC reported a significant increase in production in September, primarily driven by Saudi Arabia, which raised its crude output to approximately 8.4 million barrels per day from around 6.2 million in August. Despite this increase, OPEC has also cut its demand growth forecast for 2026 for the sixth consecutive month, while raising its outlook for the following year, citing the need to replenish inventories depleted by ongoing conflicts. As traders await the Asian market's response to the latest developments, the situation remains fluid with potential implications for global oil supply.
