Morgan Stanley Raises Brent Crude Price Forecast to $105 Amid High Freight Costs

Morgan Stanley has increased its forecast for Brent crude oil prices, now expecting an average of $105 per barrel in the fourth quarter of 2026, up from a previous estimate of $100. The bank also raised its forecast for the first quarter of 2027 to $100, from $95. This adjustment comes as the cost of shipping oil remains unusually high, giving Brent a competitive edge over long-haul alternatives such as West Texas Intermediate (WTI) and crudes from Brazil and West Africa.

The bank's analysts noted that while Persian Gulf crude exports have rebounded to within 10% of prewar levels, Brent continues to trade above $100. The high freight costs are influencing the pricing dynamics, as refiners in Northwest Europe are benefiting from cheaper deliveries of short-haul crude, while long-haul suppliers are adjusting their prices to absorb the increased shipping expenses. This situation has led to a decline in the prices of long-haul grades relative to Brent.

Morgan Stanley's latest forecast builds on a significant upgrade made in August, when the bank raised its Brent price estimates due to a slower-than-expected recovery in Middle Eastern oil supply and declining inventories. The current outlook emphasizes the importance of freight costs and shipping security in the Gulf region, which are critical factors that could determine whether Brent prices remain above $100 into 2027.
