China to Release Key Inflation Data Amid Rising Energy Costs

On October 14, 2026, at 0130 GMT, China will release its consumer and producer price data for September, a key indicator that could influence global markets. The data comes as factory-gate inflation is expected to be impacted by rising global energy costs. In August, consumer prices increased by 0.8% year-on-year, up from 0.5%, while producer prices rose by 3.8% from 3.5%, driven by higher energy prices, according to the National Bureau of Statistics of China.

Analysts are particularly focused on the producer price index (PPI), which reflects imported inflation due to rising crude oil and non-ferrous metal prices. A continued increase in producer prices could indicate that the effects of the oil price surge are still affecting Chinese input costs. However, the consumer price index (CPI) remains below Beijing's informal target of around 3%, raising concerns about weak domestic demand and the ability of manufacturers to pass on higher costs to consumers.

Additionally, trade figures for September will be released, following a strong performance in August where exports rose by 18.6% year-on-year and imports increased by 21.7% in yuan terms. The dollar-denominated trade surplus was approximately $119 billion. A significant rise in PPI could suggest that China is transferring higher goods prices to the global market, while a lower CPI would highlight ongoing challenges in household demand, potentially leading to further policy easing by Chinese authorities.
