US Consumer Price Index Report Set for Release Amid Rising Energy Costs

The US Consumer Price Index (CPI) report for September is scheduled for release on October 14, 2026, at 8:30 AM ET. This report, along with the Producer Price Index (PPI) set to be published on October 15, will provide crucial insights into inflation trends as traders evaluate the potential need for further monetary policy tightening by the Federal Reserve. Analysts will also be looking closely at the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) and Core PCE figures derived from these readings.

Expectations for the September CPI indicate a month-over-month increase of 0.6% for the headline figure, up from 0.4% in August. Year-over-year, the headline CPI is anticipated to rise to 3.6%, compared to 3.4% the previous month. In contrast, the Core CPI, which excludes food and energy prices, is expected to show a month-over-month increase of 0.2%, down from 0.3%, and a year-over-year increase of 2.5%, slightly higher than the previous 2.4%.

Rising energy prices are projected to contribute significantly to the headline inflation figure. Last month, gasoline prices surged by 3.9%, accounting for over one-third of the monthly increase. However, the core inflation reading will be critical in determining whether these energy costs are affecting other goods and services. A core reading of 0.2% or lower could provide the Federal Reserve with more flexibility in its policy decisions, while a higher core inflation rate could lead to increased Treasury yields and bolster the US dollar as traders reassess the likelihood of further rate hikes.
