US Stocks Decline Amid Volatile Trading and Mixed Earnings Reports

US stocks experienced a turbulent trading session on October 12, 2026, closing lower despite significant intraday fluctuations. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 181.02 points, or 0.35%, to finish at 51,675.16. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite also recorded declines, with the S&P 500 down 1.73 points, or 0.02%, at 7,805.51, and the Nasdaq Composite down 41.52 points, or 0.15%, at 27,204.38. The trading day saw the Dow swing nearly 729 points, highlighting the volatility in the market as investors reacted to earnings reports from major companies.

The earnings season commenced with reports from several large firms, including JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, Wells Fargo, Goldman Sachs, Johnson & Johnson, and UnitedHealth. Despite some companies exceeding earnings expectations, their stock prices fell. For instance, Goldman Sachs reported earnings per share of $17.01, surpassing expectations, yet its shares declined by 0.23%. Similarly, UnitedHealth's earnings beat estimates, but its stock slipped by 0.20%. In contrast, Citigroup experienced the largest drop among the banks, with shares falling 5.60%.

Attention now shifts to the upcoming Consumer Price Index (CPI) report for September, scheduled for release on October 13, 2026, at 8:30 AM ET. This report is expected to provide further insights into inflation trends, which will be crucial for traders as they assess the implications for corporate earnings and market conditions.
