Boston Fed President Highlights Elevated Economic Uncertainty and Inflation Pressures

Boston Federal Reserve President Susan Collins stated on Tuesday that economic uncertainty is currently elevated, emphasizing the importance of monitoring the breadth of inflation pressures in the economy. Collins indicated that her assessment of future interest rate adjustments will depend significantly on whether inflation spreads beyond energy prices into a wider array of goods and services.

In her remarks, Collins reiterated her support for a further interest rate hike before the end of 2026, following the Fed's recent increase in September that raised the policy rate to a range of 3.75% to 4.00%. She noted that while her outlook remains generally positive, with healthy economic growth and a job market near full employment, the potential for sustained inflation remains a key concern. Factors such as rising energy costs, tariffs, and investments in technology infrastructure are contributing to this inflationary pressure.

Collins' comments come amid discussions among Fed officials about the timing of the next rate increase, with many suggesting that a decision is more likely in December rather than at the upcoming meeting scheduled for late October. She stressed that the Fed's policy direction will be guided by incoming economic data, highlighting the need for caution in the current uncertain environment.
