Iran Strikes Tanker Under US Navy Escort in Strait of Hormuz
An oil tanker under the escort of the United States Navy was struck by an Iranian missile in the Strait of Hormuz on September 17, 2026. This incident marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict that has severely disrupted oil supply routes in the region. The attack occurred while the tanker was navigating a specialized transit route designed to bypass blockades, highlighting the increasing risks faced by vessels in the area.
The UK Maritime Trade Operations center issued a security warning following the incident, which took place approximately 16 nautical miles northeast of Khasab, Oman. Fortunately, the crew of the tanker is reported safe, and no immediate environmental damage has been confirmed. Maritime authorities are currently investigating the attack, which follows a series of ballistic missile launches from southern Iran targeting the strategic waterway.
The ongoing conflict, which escalated on February 28, 2026, has already resulted in significant disruptions to oil supply, with the International Energy Agency estimating a loss of about 4% of global oil supply due to the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, and the shutdown of Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline. The recent attack on the escorted tanker is expected to further elevate oil prices, as the market reacts to the heightened risks associated with shipping in the region.
