Trump Approaches Decision on Resuming Military Action Against Iran

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated he is nearing a significant decision regarding the potential resumption of large-scale military operations against Iran. In an interview with Axios, Trump described the situation as a critical juncture, stating, "Do I want to go in and annihilate them or do I not?" His comments come ahead of a scheduled meeting with leaders from six Gulf states—Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Oman—during the UN General Assembly in New York.

The backdrop to Trump's remarks includes a cautious approach taken earlier this year, when he refrained from escalating military action after warnings from Saudi Arabia and Qatar about potential Iranian retaliation against their oil and gas facilities. Since then, the U.S. has focused on sanctions, a naval blockade, and efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, while maintaining military presence in the region. U.S. officials have noted that the current military holding pattern cannot be sustained indefinitely, necessitating a decision soon.

The outcome of the upcoming meeting with Gulf leaders could influence whether the U.S. opts for renewed diplomatic efforts or intensifies military action. Trump has expressed a desire to hear directly from regional allies about the next steps in the conflict. Meanwhile, the White House is also working on a post-war strategy aimed at containing Iran and fostering normalization between Israel and its neighbors, with upcoming elections in Israel and the U.S. midterms in November impacting the timeline for these plans.
