JP Morgan Lacks Clear Outlook on Oil Market Amid Ongoing Iran Conflict

JP Morgan has stated it no longer has a clear baseline view for oil markets, marking a significant shift in its analysis six months into the ongoing conflict involving Iran. The bank's analysts indicated that they are unable to model a potential endgame for the situation, which has led to substantial disruptions in oil supply. Currently, Brent crude is trading around $106 per barrel, while JP Morgan estimates its fair value at approximately $90, highlighting a $16 gap that reflects market concerns over further supply losses beyond the estimated 10 million barrels per day already impacted by the war.

As the conflict continues, U.S. gasoline prices have reached around $4.35 per gallon, and diesel prices have surged to a record near $6.30 per gallon, coinciding with peak winter demand and historically low inventories. Global crude and product inventories have decreased by about 555 million barrels since the onset of the war, which is only a third of the decline that JP Morgan had initially projected. Despite these disruptions, the bank noted that prices have not escalated as sharply as expected, largely due to a significant drop in demand, which is running approximately 4.4 million barrels per day below levels from the previous year.

JP Morgan has also flagged various risks that could further impact oil supply, including threats to shipping routes such as the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and recent attacks on Saudi Arabia's export infrastructure. While the bank acknowledges that sizeable inventories in regions like China, Europe, Japan, and South Korea may provide some buffer against price increases, it warns that ongoing disruptions in the Middle East could lead to higher prices later this year as the market increasingly relies on demand destruction to maintain balance. This admission from a bank of JP Morgan's stature underscores the complexities and uncertainties surrounding the current oil market situation.
