Micron (MU) Stock Surges Nearly 10% on Advanced Memory Tech Ahead of Quarterly Report
Key Highlights
- Shares of Micron climbed 4% on Friday, reaching $1,015.80 and marking a two-session advance of approximately 10%.
- The company unveiled what it describes as the industry’s first 512GB DDR5 RDIMM, capable of speeds reaching 9,200 MT/s.
- This innovative module consumes just 16 watts, delivering over 60% power savings compared to four 128GB modules with equivalent capacity.
- Both AMD and Intel are currently validating this technology for upcoming server platforms, with mass production scheduled for late 2027.
- The company’s fiscal Q4 earnings announcement is set for Sept. 30, with Goldman Sachs projecting figures surpassing consensus estimates.
Micron (MU) shares finished Friday’s trading session at $1,015.80, registering a 3.92% increase, or approximately 4% when rounded. After-hours trading added another 0.20%, bringing the stock’s two-day advance to roughly 10%.
The rally arrives as market participants gear up for Micron’s fiscal fourth-quarter financial disclosure scheduled for Sept. 30. Management will publish results prior to conducting its earnings conference call at 2:30 p.m. Mountain time.
Micron recently gave investors additional insight into its data-center memory development strategy. The semiconductor manufacturer showcased what it claims is the industry’s inaugural 512GB DDR5 RDIMM.
This module targets next-generation server infrastructure and achieves transfer rates of up to 9,200 MT/s. A dual-socket server configuration with 24 slots could accommodate up to 12TB of DDR5 DRAM capacity.
Advancing Server Memory Capabilities
Micron reports that the 512GB module draws approximately 16 watts of power. By comparison, achieving identical capacity using four 128GB modules would require roughly 44.2 watts.
This translates to power efficiency gains exceeding 60%. The company further indicates the module can achieve up to 1.4 times superior performance versus 256GB DDR5 configurations when handling specific analytics tasks.
Both AMD and Intel are conducting validation testing of this new technology for their forthcoming server platforms. Volume manufacturing is anticipated to commence during the latter half of 2027.
This production schedule suggests the product won’t materially impact Micron’s immediate financial performance. Nevertheless, its introduction highlights the memory capabilities being engineered for tomorrow’s AI, analytics and database applications.
Micron has been establishing extended customer partnerships as well. In June, the company disclosed that 16 strategic arrangements were projected to generate $22 billion through cash deposits and associated financial commitments.
These partnerships encompass data center, automotive and consumer segments. Micron has additionally reported approximately $100 billion in outstanding performance obligations from executed contracts.
Analysts Project Strong Quarterly Performance
Focus now shifts to the upcoming Sept. 30 earnings release. Micron previously issued guidance calling for approximately $50 billion in fourth-quarter revenue alongside an 86% gross margin.
Goldman Sachs analyst James Schneider forecasts $51.9 billion in revenue, an 87.3% gross margin and adjusted earnings per share of $32.54. Consensus Wall Street projections referenced in the analysis indicate $50.5 billion, 87% and $31.40, respectively.
Schneider anticipates constrained DRAM and NAND supply dynamics to bolster quarterly results. He further projects Micron will sustain or expand its approximately 20% share of the HBM market.
Institutional interest has intensified approaching the earnings date. Hedge fund ownership of Micron expanded to 184 during Q2 from 154 in Q1, based on the available data.
Short interest totaled 29.7 million units as of Aug. 31, accounting for 2.64% of shares available for public trading. This reflected a 1.04% decline from the prior reporting interval.
Micron’s Sept. 30 report will deliver updated intelligence on DRAM pricing trends, HBM demand patterns, HBM4 shipment volumes, customer partnership progress, capital expenditure plans and supply outlook. The company formally announced this earnings date on Aug. 26.
