New York Fed President Predicts One More Rate Hike in 2026

John Williams, President of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, indicated that an additional interest rate hike may be warranted in 2026, while he does not foresee any increases in 2027. Williams expressed confidence that inflation will approach the Federal Reserve's target of 2% next year, as the impacts of tariffs and energy price fluctuations diminish.

During his remarks, Williams acknowledged the potential inflationary pressures stemming from advancements in artificial intelligence but emphasized that the overall economy is not exhibiting signs of overheating. This perspective contrasts with current market expectations, which anticipate a rate hike in December 2026 and two further increases in 2027, suggesting a less aggressive stance from Williams than what the markets are pricing in.
