Oil Prices Decline Amid Increased Supply and Geopolitical Tensions

Oil prices experienced a decline in early Asian trading on October 5, 2026, as rising crude exports from the Middle East and a coordinated release of emergency stocks by the Group of Seven (G7) nations outweighed concerns over recent attacks on Gulf energy infrastructure. Brent crude futures fell approximately 0.3% to around $102 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) dropped about 0.7% to around $90.50. This decline follows a pullback from last week's gains, with Brent surrendering most of its weekly increases after the G7 agreed to release 100 million barrels of diesel and crude from emergency reserves.

The increase in Middle Eastern crude exports has been notable, with shipments exceeding pre-war levels on four out of seven days in the last week of September. This surge in supply comes despite ongoing missile and drone attacks claimed by Yemen's Houthi movement against Saudi Aramco facilities in Riyadh and Khurais, which have not been confirmed by Saudi authorities. In response to the changing market dynamics, Saudi Aramco has unexpectedly cut its November crude prices for Asian buyers to six-year lows, indicating a strategy to regain market share as export volumes recover.

While the current supply situation appears to be stabilizing prices, analysts caution that the risk of further damage to Gulf infrastructure remains. The geopolitical landscape is complicated by Yemen's ongoing conflict, with the Houthis retaliating against Saudi-led strikes. Additionally, Ukraine has announced plans to intensify attacks on Russian oil refineries, adding another layer of uncertainty to the global oil market. As the situation evolves, the balance between supply and geopolitical risk continues to be closely monitored.
