Russian Authorities Investigate Death of Laboratory Worker Amid Plague Concerns

A 28-year-old laboratory assistant at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute in Shelekhov, Siberia, died on October 2 from pneumonia of unknown origin, prompting a significant health investigation. The worker, identified as Darya Shipilova, reportedly broke a test tube containing Yersinia pestis, the bacterium responsible for plague, during her work on September 25. While Russian health authorities, including Rospotrebnadzor, have stated that tests found no trace of the microorganisms associated with her work, media reports suggest a possible laboratory accident or infection during a work trip to neighboring Buryatia.

In response to the incident, approximately 189 individuals who had close contact with Shipilova are currently under a three-week quarantine. Hospitals in the region have been closed, and staff at the nearby Irkutsk Aluminum Plant have been instructed to wear masks as a precaution. So far, all close contacts have tested negative for symptoms related to the plague, which has provided some reassurance to health officials and the public.

The situation has raised concerns reminiscent of early COVID-19 discussions, particularly regarding laboratory safety and potential leaks. The observation period is set to conclude in late October, which will be a critical time for determining whether the health scare will dissipate or escalate. Meanwhile, the local aluminum supply chain remains under scrutiny due to existing market pressures.
