Oracle (ORCL) Stock Surges 5% on Strong Q1 Results and AI Momentum
Key Highlights
- ORCL shares jumped 5.2% to reach $150.58 following robust fiscal first-quarter performance, with total revenue climbing 30% year-over-year to $19.3 billion
- Infrastructure-as-a-service cloud revenue skyrocketed 121% to $7.4 billion, primarily fueled by compute sales to OpenAI
- Earnings per share reached $1.92, exceeding analyst projections by $0.18, while adjusted operating margin expanded to 42%
- Founder Larry Ellison withdrew a previously announced plan to divest up to 50 million shares
- The company maintains approximately $664 billion in contracted backlog, including roughly $30 billion tied to artificial intelligence projects
Shares of Oracle (ORCL) advanced 5.2% to $150.58 during Thursday’s trading session, reaching an intraday peak of $152.00, following the enterprise software giant’s stronger-than-anticipated fiscal first-quarter financial report and growing optimism surrounding its artificial intelligence initiatives.
The company reported quarterly revenue of $19.3 billion, representing a 30% increase from the same period last year and surpassing Wall Street’s consensus estimate of $19.1 billion. The previous trading session had seen ORCL close at $143.16.
The most impressive performance came from the cloud infrastructure segment, which exploded 121% higher to $7.4 billion, comfortably exceeding analyst expectations of $7.1 billion. This division provides computing resources to artificial intelligence firms, with OpenAI representing a crucial client.
The company’s adjusted operating margin expanded to 42%, up from approximately 41% in the year-ago quarter. This profitability improvement occurred despite substantial increases in data center expenditures needed to accommodate AI computing demands.
Earnings per share registered at $1.92, marking a 31% year-over-year gain and landing $0.18 above consensus forecasts. The earnings surprise enabled Oracle to utilize less capital than analysts had projected.
OpenAI Valuation News Provides Additional Momentum
Market speculation that OpenAI is pursuing fresh funding at a valuation ranging from $1.2 trillion to $1.5 trillion provided an additional catalyst for Oracle’s stock price. Oracle reportedly maintains a $300 billion, five-year computing contract with OpenAI, and any indication of OpenAI’s financial stability diminishes concerns about potential contract fulfillment issues.
Oracle’s remaining performance obligations, which represent contracted revenue yet to be recognized, stand at approximately $664 billion. Within this massive backlog, deals related to artificial intelligence account for roughly $30 billion.
Founder Larry Ellison also terminated a stock sale plan he had previously established to dispose of up to 50 million Oracle shares, eliminating a potential supply concern that had created negative sentiment earlier in the week.
Company leadership provided guidance calling for revenue of “at least” $90 billion in fiscal year 2027, employing more assertive language compared to previous quarterly outlooks. The FY2027 earnings per share forecast also received a modest upward revision to $8.10.
Capital expenditure projections for fiscal 2027 remained unchanged at slightly above $90 billion, consistent with the previous quarter’s guidance. Management suggested this figure should decline over time.
Wall Street Ratings and Price Targets
KeyCorp elevated its FY2027 earnings per share projection to $6.82 from $6.50 and boosted its FY2028 estimate to $8.95 from $8.70 in response to the quarterly results.
DA Davidson and Wolfe Research both maintain buy or outperform recommendations with price targets of $225. Mizuho established a $320 target. Royal Bank of Canada reduced its target from $190 to $165 while maintaining a sector perform rating.
The average rating among 41 Wall Street analysts stands at “Moderate Buy” with a mean price objective of $252.58.
Oracle currently commands a market capitalization of approximately $455 billion, trades at a price-to-earnings ratio of 23.60, and is valued at roughly 17 times forward earnings estimates. By comparison, the S&P 500 index trades at around 19 times forward earnings.
The stock’s 50-day moving average rests at $141.12. ORCL has demonstrated reliable buying interest above the $140 level since early August.
Management also declared a quarterly cash dividend of $0.50 per share, scheduled for payment on October 23, with an ex-dividend date of October 9.
