Philadelphia Fed Business Index Shows Decline in October

The Philadelphia Federal Reserve's business index for October registered at 20.9, a decrease from the previous month's reading of 37.8 and below the expected figure of 28.4. This index reflects the overall health of the manufacturing sector in the region, indicating continued expansion despite the decline in several key indicators.

New orders fell significantly to 4.3 from 29.2 last month, while shipments decreased to 15.3 from 27.7. Unfilled orders also saw a drop, coming in at 2.4 compared to 20.4 in September. Delivery times and inventories showed similar trends, with delivery times at 8.5 and inventories at -12.8, both lower than the previous month.

Despite the decline in current indicators, the employment index remained positive, suggesting an overall increase in employment, although it edged down to 9.1 from 11.8. Firms expressed expectations for growth over the next six months, although future indicators, including new orders and shipments, also showed declines. The prices paid index decreased to 43.2, while the prices received index increased to 40.1, indicating ongoing price pressures in the manufacturing sector.
