Anthropic Urged to Delay IPO Amid AI Safety Concerns

Anthropic, a prominent artificial intelligence company, is facing pressure to postpone its planned initial public offering (IPO) due to concerns regarding AI safety and governance. Mark Levine, the Comptroller of New York City, has initiated discussions with the company, emphasizing the need for a thorough assessment of these risks before proceeding with the IPO.

Levine manages public pension funds with assets exceeding $325 billion and has expressed that a significant safety incident involving AI after the company goes public could have detrimental effects on investors. Anthropic is reportedly aiming for an IPO as soon as November, following a quarterly revenue report of $16.8 billion. This situation highlights the growing scrutiny surrounding AI safety as a potential barrier to one of the largest IPOs in history.
