Rising Shipping Costs Signal Ongoing Oil Market Disruption

The ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran has significantly impacted the oil market, leading to a shift in how oil is transported. Despite disruptions to traditional shipping routes, oil continues to flow from the Middle East, but the costs associated with moving it have surged. In September, ship-to-ship transfers around Oman are expected to reach approximately 2.5 million barrels per day, a notable increase from 1.4 million barrels per day in August.

Freight expenses for very large crude carriers on certain Gulf routes have risen above $30 per barrel. This increase means that transportation now accounts for more than a quarter of the total cost of a barrel of crude oil, which is currently priced around $100. This shift highlights a broader issue, as the oil market becomes less efficient due to the complexities introduced by the conflict, including additional voyages and higher insurance costs.

While oil prices may stabilize, the persistent high shipping costs indicate that the energy shock is not fading. The inflationary impact of these increased transportation costs can accumulate, affecting consumers and businesses even if crude prices do not rise further. The current situation suggests that the challenges in the oil market have merely shifted downstream, with ongoing risks to inflation as the costs of maintaining oil flow through alternative routes remain elevated.
