Strategy (MSTR) Stock Soars 32% Over Three Days as Bitcoin Surges Past $70K
Key Highlights
- Strategy shares climbed more than 10% during pre-market hours following Bitcoin’s rise above $70,000, marking the first time since early June 2026.
- Bitcoin experienced an approximately 8% single-day surge, spurred by the U.S. Treasury’s plan to double long-term bond repurchases and President Trump’s White House cryptocurrency summit.
- The cryptocurrency rally forced approximately $1.44 billion in short position liquidations throughout digital asset markets.
- Other crypto-related stocks including Coinbase, MARA Holdings, and Robinhood experienced significant gains, reflecting widespread sector momentum.
- Strategy holds 840,447 Bitcoin purchased for $63.36 billion, currently worth around $65.04 billion, marking a return to profitability on its cryptocurrency holdings.
Strategy shares experienced a surge exceeding 10% in Friday’s pre-market session on August 21, climbing from a previous closing price of $112.39 to reach $124.60, coinciding with Bitcoin’s overnight push above the $70,000 threshold for the first time since early June 2026.
The flagship cryptocurrency gained approximately 8% within a single trading day, marking its strongest weekly showing in over two years. This upward movement resulted in roughly $1.44 billion worth of forced liquidations targeting short positions throughout cryptocurrency markets.
Two significant catalysts powered Bitcoin’s breakthrough. The U.S. Treasury Department announced plans to expand its long-term bond buyback program to at least $4 billion per operation, representing a minimum doubling of current levels. Meanwhile, President Trump convened cryptocurrency industry leaders at the White House and urged Congressional action on the Clarity Act.
Strategy functions as one of the most heavily leveraged publicly-traded vehicles for Bitcoin exposure, meaning significant cryptocurrency price movements typically produce magnified effects on the stock price.
During early Friday trading, shares had advanced 9.1% to reach $122.64. This positioned MSTR for approximately a 32% advance since Tuesday’s market close, potentially marking its strongest three-day performance since November 2024.
Cryptocurrency Holdings Return to Profit
Strategy reported ownership of 840,447 Bitcoin as of Sunday. The company invested $63.36 billion to accumulate this position. With Bitcoin trading near $77,391 on Friday, the total holdings reached a valuation of approximately $65.04 billion, returning the investment to positive territory.
This represents an important turning point for the organization following a challenging opening half of 2026, during which the stock had declined substantially from its 52-week peak of $365.21.
Regarding capital management activities, Strategy has repurchased roughly 288,930 units of its variable-rate Series A preferred shares at an average cost of approximately $86.52. The company has communicated its objective of supporting the preferred stock near the $100 level, while maintaining a 12% dividend payment.
The preferred shares, which trade under ticker symbol STRC, increased 0.5% to $95.76 on Friday. Earlier this year, these securities had declined to as low as $70.
Wall Street Maintains Bullish Stance
Following second-quarter earnings, analysts from Clear Street, Benchmark, and B. Riley reduced their price objectives. Nevertheless, all three firms retained Buy recommendations, with consensus projections continuing to exceed current trading levels.
The wider cryptocurrency equity segment followed Strategy’s trajectory. Coinbase advanced 10%, MARA Holdings increased over 9%, and Robinhood surged more than 14% during pre-market activity.
Major benchmark indices also recorded gains, with the S&P 500 rising 0.3%, the Dow Jones climbing 0.6%, and the Nasdaq advancing 0.5%, indicating broad risk appetite across markets.
Bitcoin’s movement above its 200-day moving average provided additional technical support for the rally, encouraging momentum-driven purchases across cryptocurrency-related equities.
As of Friday morning, MSTR shares were changing hands at $122.64, remaining substantially below the 52-week high of $365.21.
