Tencent stock experienced significant upward momentum on Tuesday following the company’s introduction of an upgraded AI image generation platform, positioning it for its strongest single-day performance since early June.
Tencent Holdings Limited, TCTZF
Shares of Hong Kong-listed Tencent (HK:0700) surged as much as 7.8% during intraday trading before moderating to approximately 5.5%, reaching HK$458.4. The company’s stock had already posted a 2.6% increase during Monday’s session.
The driving force behind the rally was the introduction of Hy-Image-3.5-Preview, an advanced platform offering text-to-image and image-to-image capabilities, complemented by multi-turn conversational editing features. The system produces images with resolutions reaching 4K and processes multimodal input formats.
According to Tencent, the upgraded model delivered a 30% performance improvement compared to its earlier iteration during internal evaluations. These assessments included blind testing conducted with hundreds of professional designers employed by the company.
Benchmark comparisons show the model performs on par with ByteDance’s Seedream 5.0 Pro while demonstrating marginal advantages over both Google’s Nano Banana Pro and Alibaba’s Qwen-Image-3.0 Pro.
Accelerating Artificial Intelligence Development
This product launch represents part of a comprehensive strategy by Tencent to strengthen its position in artificial intelligence. The organization has been integrating its Hunyuan model suite throughout its product portfolio, incorporating it into the Yuanbao AI assistant and additional applications.
The company recently brought aboard Yao Shunyu, formerly with OpenAI, to serve as chief AI scientist. Meanwhile, WorkBuddy, Tencent’s AI-powered desktop agent, has established itself as China’s leading office automation tool, demonstrating the ability to autonomously manage complex workplace tasks.
Market analysts from Daiwa highlighted that despite elevated capital expenditure requirements, Tencent maintains multiple avenues for AI monetization. The technology is already delivering improvements in user engagement metrics, operational efficiency, and revenue generation across its primary gaming and advertising operations.
Alibaba Unveils Competing Strategy
Tuesday proved eventful for Chinese technology sector AI developments. Alibaba conducted its annual Apsara Conference on the same day, presenting an ambitious artificial intelligence roadmap.
The e-commerce giant announced intentions to develop a massive model incorporating between 5 trillion and 10 trillion parameters, representing a potential two to fourfold increase over its existing flagship Qwen 3.8 Max. Additionally, the company introduced a proprietary AI chip as part of its comprehensive strategy encompassing chips, data infrastructure, models, and AI agents.
Alibaba’s Hong Kong-listed shares advanced 1.95% during Tuesday’s trading.
The wider Hong Kong technology sector also posted gains. The Hang Seng Index increased 0.3% while the Hang Seng Tech Index climbed 0.5%.
Tencent’s WorkBuddy platform and growing adoption of its AI productivity solutions suggest emerging revenue opportunities in an increasingly competitive marketplace.
Having already secured a 2.6% gain on Monday in anticipation of the model launch, Tuesday’s rally represented a continuation of positive momentum for Tencent shares over a two-day period.
