Greenback Surges to Seven-Week Peak Amid Fed Rate Speculation and Middle East Tensions

      TLDR

      • The greenback briefly touched a seven-week peak at 100.667 on the U.S. Dollar Index before easing
      • Crude oil markets experienced sharp swings following Iran’s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz in seven days
      • Japan’s currency extended losses for a third consecutive session, weakening to 157.69 against the dollar
      • Traders are assigning a 55% probability to an additional Federal Reserve rate increase in October

The greenback surged to its strongest level in seven weeks on Tuesday before moderating, as petroleum market volatility and monetary policy expectations created turbulence throughout foreign exchange markets.

The U.S. Dollar Index advanced 0.1% to settle at 100.49, after reaching an intraday zenith of 100.667. Futures markets are currently indicating a 55% probability of an additional quarter-point rate increase at the Fed’s October policy meeting, based on CME FedWatch data.

Petroleum prices played a pivotal role in driving initial dollar strength. Climbing crude values supported the greenback given America’s status as a net petroleum exporter, while the currency also attracted safe-haven flows amid energy market turbulence.

However, prices reversed course after Japan’s Kyodo News reported Iran’s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within a seven-day timeframe, contingent upon the United States reducing military pressure in the region.

U.S. President Donald Trump additionally indicated openness to direct diplomatic engagement with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian during the UN General Assembly scheduled for this week.

The diplomatic opening contributed to crude oil and European natural gas futures retreating from multi-week peaks.

Japanese Currency Extends Decline as Intervention Speculation Intensifies

The Japanese yen weakened 0.33% to 157.69 versus the dollar, marking its third consecutive daily decline. The depreciation occurred despite the Bank of Japan implementing a 25 basis point rate increase to 1.25% during the previous week.

Market liquidity in Tokyo remained constrained due to extended public holidays, which currency dealers noted exacerbated price volatility. The Nikkei newspaper disclosed that the Bank of Japan executed formal “rate checks” with foreign exchange trading desks, a procedure frequently interpreted as preliminary to direct market intervention.

Japanese monetary authorities control approximately $1 trillion in foreign exchange reserves, providing substantial firepower to support the yen if circumstances warrant.

The euro declined 0.1% to $1.1456, while the British pound traded marginally lower at $1.3364.

Australian Dollar Stable While New Zealand Currency Gains on Inflation Commentary

The Australian dollar remained unchanged at $0.7123 following Reserve Bank of Australia Governor Michele Bullock’s remarks at a public engagement. Market participants are currently pricing in a 90% likelihood of a rate increase from the RBA at next week’s policy meeting.

The New Zealand dollar climbed to $0.5735 after Reserve Bank of New Zealand Governor Anna Breman indicated that elevated crude prices would result in somewhat higher inflation projections.

The movements throughout Asia-Pacific currencies underscored the tight correlation between central bank policy expectations and energy price dynamics at present.

With the UN General Assembly in session and potential Iran-U.S. diplomatic engagement on the horizon, foreign exchange traders are monitoring developments that could influence petroleum prices and subsequently alter the dollar’s trajectory.
