Tesla (TSLA) Stock: Optimus Production Facility Nears Completion as First Major Order Confirmed
Key Highlights
- Recent aerial surveillance reveals the steel structure of Tesla’s standalone Optimus manufacturing plant at Giga Texas is approaching completion, approximately half a year after construction commenced.
- Workers are simultaneously pouring concrete across three elevated levels while continuing foundation work at ground level.
- The automaker has placed its inaugural large-scale production order of approximately 5,000 Optimus robots with component suppliers, marking a significant step beyond pilot manufacturing.
- Tesla is conducting comprehensive supplier assessments throughout various Chinese metropolitan areas such as Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Ningbo.
- The Texas manufacturing complex aims to achieve full-scale Optimus production by summer 2027, while the Fremont pilot facility is currently manufacturing Gen 3 robots at scale.
Construction of Tesla’s purpose-built Optimus factory at the Texas Gigafactory has entered its concluding phase of structural steel installation, based on aerial documentation shared Thursday by local observer Joe Tegtmeyer.
In his latest update, Tegtmeyer observed that the structural steel installation is now approximately five column sections away from connecting with the building’s northern edge beam. This positions the main framework near finalization, about half a year since Tesla initiated excavation at the North Campus location in late March.
The recorded footage captures concrete being poured across three separate upper levels concurrently, while construction teams install reinforcement bars and complete foundation pouring at the base level. This overlapping construction methodology mirrors the accelerated scheduling strategy Tesla employed during the original Giga Texas development to reduce overall construction duration.
This structure represents one component of an expansive North Campus development exceeding 5.2 million square feet. The manufacturing building will extend almost 4,000 feet lengthwise, running parallel to the current vehicle production facility.
Supplier Evaluations and Large-Scale Orders Indicate Production Transition
In addition to the physical construction momentum, emerging evidence suggests Tesla is accelerating its supply chain preparations. The company has recently placed a new procurement order for roughly 5,000 Optimus robots with its manufacturing partners. This represents the company’s first production order measured in thousands rather than hundreds, following previous experimental runs of several hundred units.
Concurrently, Tesla is performing detailed assessments of its Optimus component suppliers throughout China, with site visits scheduled across Shanghai, Hangzhou, Ningbo, and Xiamen. Sources within the manufacturing sector indicate that this pairing of supplier evaluations with substantial orders demonstrates that Optimus has transitioned from prototype development to scalable production readiness.
Adjacent to the Optimus manufacturing building on the same campus sits Terafab, the collaborative semiconductor production facility operated by Tesla and SpaceX. This plant will manufacture the processors that power field-deployed Optimus units. The strategic decision to colocate robot assembly and semiconductor manufacturing is intentional, designed to minimize transportation duration and mitigate supply chain bottlenecks between these interdependent operations.
Tesla has maintained its previously announced timeline targeting high-volume Optimus production launch at the Texas location during summer 2027, without providing additional schedule updates.
Fremont Facility Operational During Texas Construction Phase
The more compact pilot production line in Fremont initiated mass manufacturing of the latest Gen 3 robot variant in January. This California facility is projected to assemble tens of thousands of units throughout this year, principally to collect operational field data that Tesla requires to optimize the robot’s artificial intelligence systems ahead of the Texas facility’s production escalation.
Elon Musk has established an ambitious long-range production objective of 10 million Optimus units annually from the Texas facility operating at maximum capacity. This volume would substantially surpass the one million unit pilot production line Tesla is establishing separately at the Fremont location.
The Chinese manufacturing companies receiving Optimus component contracts are predominantly established producers from the consumer appliance and precision machinery industries, including Sanhua Intelligent Control, Tuopu Group, and Xinjian Transmission.
Tesla’s 5,000-unit procurement order with suppliers has been confirmed, and the comprehensive factory evaluation of Chinese supply chain collaborators is reportedly approaching commencement.
