Warren Buffett Relinquishes Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A) Chairman Role to Son Howard
Key Highlights
- Warren Buffett relinquishes his chairman position at Berkshire Hathaway, with immediate effect
- Howard Buffett, who has served on the board since 1993, assumes the chairman role
- Warren Buffett transitions to chairman emeritus while maintaining his board seat
- This leadership shift follows nine months after Greg Abel became CEO
- The conglomerate maintains approximately $365 billion in cash reserves and recently acquired a $37 billion position in Alphabet
In a significant leadership transition announced Friday, Warren Buffett has relinquished his position as chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, with his son Howard Buffett assuming the role immediately.
The 96-year-old investment icon will transition to the position of chairman emeritus while continuing to serve as a board member.
Leadership Succession Details
Howard Buffett brings extensive experience to the chairman position, having served as a Berkshire director for over three decades since 1993. The 70-year-old is Warren Buffett’s second-oldest child.
This announcement arrives approximately nine months following Warren Buffett’s departure from the CEO position on January 1, when Greg Abel assumed the chief executive responsibilities and operational control of the conglomerate.
Addressing shareholders in a written communication, Buffett explained his decision on timing. He noted that Abel had already been “making the decisions that matter for some time” and had surpassed his expectations in the role.
“Greg runs the company; Howard will guard its culture and values,” Buffett explained. He characterized Howard’s chairman position as functioning like a shareholder insurance policy—one that ideally won’t require activation.
Reflecting on his decades of leadership, Buffett added: “Serving as your chairman has been the privilege of a lifetime, and I have never taken your trust for granted. Father Time always wins.”
Susan Decker, who joined the board in 2007, retains her position as lead independent director.
Current State of Berkshire Operations
Since assuming the CEO role, Abel has implemented several strategic initiatives. Most notably, Berkshire established a substantial $37 billion investment in Alphabet, Google’s parent company, elevating it to a top-five portfolio holding.
Abel maintains daily communication with Buffett, regularly consulting on strategic matters and significant decisions.
During Abel’s tenure, Berkshire has expanded its share buyback program. Nevertheless, major new acquisitions have been relatively scarce.
The company’s cash reserves totaled approximately $365 billion at the end of June, representing a modest decline from the $380 billion recorded at the conclusion of March.
Berkshire’s Class A shares closed Thursday at $763,936. Year-to-date, the stock has appreciated 1.2%, though it has lagged behind the S&P 500’s performance.
When Buffett stepped down as CEO, he maintained a 30% voting stake as the controlling shareholder. He has publicly committed to donating his entire Berkshire holding—currently representing approximately 13% of the company and valued at over $140 billion—by the year 2034.
In a Friday statement, Abel paid tribute to Buffett’s legacy. “Warren’s impact on Berkshire and its owners is without parallel in the history of American business,” Abel stated. “The culture Warren built and the values he championed will remain at the heart of Berkshire, and Howard will be their guardian.”
