UAE approves Musk-led Starlink satellite internet service

The UAE has granted Elon Musk-led Starlink approval to roll out satellite-based internet services across the country as it seeks to improve its telecommunications services.

The 10-year general space services licence allows Starlink to establish, operate and manage a public satellite communications network and offer broadband satellite internet services, the UAE state-run Wam news agency reported.

The licence adds a space-based layer to the country’s national digital infrastructure, complementing terrestrial fibre-optic and 5G networks.

“This will diversify internet access options and support critical sectors including maritime and aviation transport, energy, logistics and emergency response,” the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority said in the report.

The licence scope will include individuals, businesses and government entities. No details were given on the cost or a launch date.

In April 2022, Bahrain became the first of the six-nation GCC bloc to grant a licence to offer Starlink satellite and internet services.

This month, Qatar Airways rolled out Starlink internet service on 150 of its widebody aircraft.

In November 2025, Dubai-based Emirates said it would deploy Starlink across its entire in-service fleet of 232 aircraft by mid-2027, starting with Boeing 777s in late 2025 and moving to Airbus A380s in 2026.

Bahrain’s flag carrier, Gulf Air, launched its first Starlink-equipped flight in May and will extend the service across its fleet.
