UBS Revises Treasury Yield Forecasts Amid Rising Oil Prices and Middle East Tensions
UBS has adjusted its year-end forecasts for U.S. Treasury yields, now predicting the 30-year yield will reach 5 percent and the 10-year yield will hit 4.5 percent. This revision comes as global bond markets experience a selloff, driven by escalating tensions in the Middle East and rising oil prices, with Brent crude surpassing 92 dollars a barrel. The bank's analysis indicates that long-term yields are influenced by structural fiscal concerns and heavy debt issuance, particularly related to artificial intelligence.
The recent surge in yields was triggered by Iran's attacks on two U.S. air bases in Jordan, prompting threats of retaliation from President Trump. In response, the U.S. military struck Iranian vessels laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz. As a result, the 10-year Treasury yield climbed to nearly 4.78 percent, the highest level since January 2025, while the 30-year yield reached 5.27 percent. Additionally, long-dated government bonds in Germany, France, and Japan also saw significant increases, with some yields hitting multi-decade highs.
Despite these developments, UBS maintains a preference for short to intermediate maturity government and corporate bonds, arguing that yields in this segment still have potential to decline. The bank anticipates that inflation pressures from energy and tariffs will diminish, and it expects the Federal Reserve to remain patient with interest rates for the remainder of the year. However, the recent market movements suggest that investors are increasingly pricing in further rate hikes, challenging UBS's outlook for disinflation and rate cuts.
