UK Manufacturing PMI Shows Slight Decline in September

The final manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for the United Kingdom in September registered at 51.9, slightly below the preliminary estimate of 52.0 and an increase from the previous month's figure of 51.7. This marks a continued easing in the growth rate of manufacturing output, which has slowed for the second consecutive month, indicating the weakest output growth seen in the past six months.

Rob Dobson, Director at S&P Global Market Intelligence, highlighted that the slowdown in output growth is attributed to modest increases in orders and exports, alongside rising energy prices. The survey indicated a shift in price measures, with inflationary pressures returning after a period of decline. Both input costs and factory gate selling prices have accelerated for the first time since May, driven by high energy and electronics prices, as well as rising transportation costs due to supply disruptions and increased diesel prices.

Despite the challenges, there are signs of optimism among manufacturers, with nearly half expressing expectations for output growth over the coming year. However, overall confidence remains subdued compared to levels prior to the recent geopolitical tensions, particularly the war in the Middle East. The upcoming Budget is anticipated to play a significant role in influencing future confidence within the manufacturing sector.
