US Retail Sales Rise 0.8% in September, Exceeding Expectations

Retail sales in the United States increased by 0.8% in September compared to the previous month, surpassing analysts' expectations of a 0.3% rise. This follows a revised increase of 1.2% in August, up from an earlier estimate of 1.1%. Sales excluding automobiles also exceeded forecasts, rising by 0.9% against an expected 0.5%.

However, the details of the report reveal a more nuanced picture. Sales excluding both gasoline and automobiles rose by only 0.2%, while the retail control group, which is critical for estimating goods consumption in the gross domestic product (GDP), saw a modest increase of just 0.1%, missing the anticipated 0.3%. This indicates a potential slowdown in consumer spending momentum in key categories relevant to GDP calculations.

Gasoline sales were a significant contributor to the overall increase, accounting for 71% of the dollar rise in September. Sales at gasoline stations surged by 6.4% for the month and 28.1% year-over-year, contributing $4.07 billion to the total sales increase of $5.70 billion. In contrast, spending in other categories was mixed, with restaurants showing a notable gain of 1.1%, while clothing and general merchandise saw little to no change. Overall, while consumer spending remains robust, the strength is uneven across different sectors.
