US Wholesale Inventories Increase in July, Sales Decline

Wholesale inventories in the United States advanced by 1.3% in July, surpassing the 0.2% increase that analysts had anticipated. This follows a prior month increase of 0.3%. Meanwhile, retail inventories also saw a rise of 0.7% in July, compared to a projected decline of 0.5%.

In terms of wholesale sales, June figures totaled $794.1 billion, reflecting a 3.0% decrease from May on a seasonally adjusted basis. However, sales remained 14.1% higher than in June 2025. The monthly increase for May was revised slightly upward from 3.4% to 3.5%.

The inventory-to-sales ratio for merchant wholesalers, excluding manufacturers' sales branches and offices, stood at 1.19 for June, compared to 1.30 in June 2025. This indicates a rebound in inventory levels, although the concurrent decline in sales suggests underlying weaknesses in the market.
