Bitcoin Drops Below $82,000 as Hot US Inflation Revives Fed…
Bitcoin fell below $82,000 on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, as stronger-than-expected US inflation data renewed concerns about further Federal Reserve interest rate increases and triggered a broader retreat from risk-sensitive assets. The world's largest cryptocurrency dropped more than 2% during the session, with some market reports placing its intraday low near $81,500. Trading data from Bitstamp separately showed Bitcoin falling to $81,926 following the inflation release. The decline followed a relatively stable period earlier in the day, when Bitcoin briefly traded above $84,000 before investors reassessed the outlook for US monetary policy. Ethereum, XRP and Solana also came under pressure, reflecting the broader cryptocurrency market's sensitivity to changing interest rate expectations. The selloff highlighted how macroeconomic developments continue to influence digital asset valuations despite growing institutional participation through exchange-traded funds and corporate Bitcoin treasuries.
September Inflation Exceeds Expectations
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the Consumer Price Index increased 3.7% year over year in September, exceeding economists' consensus forecast of 3.6%. Annual inflation accelerated from 3.4% in August, while consumer prices rose 0.6% month over month. Core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, increased 0.3% during September and reached 2.6% annually, also exceeding expectations. Energy prices contributed substantially to the headline increase, with gasoline prices rising 9.1% during the month. The inflation surprise pushed US Treasury yields higher and strengthened expectations that the Federal Reserve could consider additional monetary tightening. Higher yields generally reduce the relative attractiveness of non-yielding assets, including Bitcoin, while tighter financial conditions can limit speculative investment activity. The US 10-year Treasury yield approached 5.3% during the market reaction, according to contemporary reports. Cryptocurrency prices declined alongside equities, with the Nasdaq Composite falling approximately 1.4% and the S&P 500 losing around 1% during Wednesday's session. The synchronized movement reinforced Bitcoin's continued sensitivity to broader financial market conditions.ETF Demand Offers Support as $80,000 Comes Into Focus
The decline occurred despite signs of recovering institutional demand through US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds. According to SoSoValue data cited by market reports, spot Bitcoin ETFs attracted approximately $175.6 million in net inflows on October 13, their strongest daily result in nearly two weeks. The inflows followed approximately $681 million in withdrawals during the preceding week, illustrating how institutional positioning has fluctuated alongside macroeconomic uncertainty. Nevertheless, renewed ETF demand was insufficient to prevent Wednesday's decline. Ethereum fell approximately 2.8% to $2,440 during the initial selloff, while Solana and XRP also recorded losses.Market participants increasingly focused on Bitcoin's ability to maintain support around $80,000, a psychologically significant level below the latest trading range. Technical indicators cited by analysts identified additional potential support near $79,700, although such levels do not guarantee a price reversal. The Federal Reserve's October 27–28 policy meeting represents the next major monetary policy event for investors assessing the implications of persistent inflation.Further inflation releases, employment data and central bank commentary could influence expectations before that decision. For Bitcoin, the immediate challenge is whether institutional buying and existing market liquidity can offset selling pressure generated by higher bond yields and the possibility of tighter monetary policy. Wednesday's decline demonstrates that expanding cryptocurrency adoption has not eliminated Bitcoin's exposure to traditional macroeconomic risks.Source: FinanceFeeds
