Market Anticipates 25 Basis Point Rate Hike by Federal Reserve Ahead of October Meeting

The market is currently pricing in a 24.9% chance that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates by 25 basis points during its upcoming meeting on October 28, 2026. This marks a significant shift in expectations, occurring just weeks after the Fed's last rate hike. The Federal Open Market Committee is set to convene from October 27 to 28, and while the likelihood of a rate increase has increased, many traders still consider maintaining the current rate as the most probable outcome.

The recent uptick in hike probabilities follows the release of the September Consumer Price Index (CPI) on October 14, which showed a 0.6% month-over-month increase—the largest rise in five months. This inflation data has led to a notable jump in the odds of a rate hike, with some markets indicating probabilities as high as 47.5%. In contrast, earlier in October, softer job data and dovish comments from Fed officials had lowered expectations for an immediate hike.

Despite the fluctuations in market sentiment, many analysts now view December as a more likely timeframe for the next rate increase. This perspective aligns with the Fed's projections, suggesting that a hike in October would indicate a more aggressive stance than the central bank has previously demonstrated. As the meeting approaches, investors are closely monitoring how Chairman Kevin Warsh and other policymakers frame their outlook, as their comments could provide crucial insights into future monetary policy.
