U.S. Government Prioritizes Bitcoin Security Over New Purchases
On October 14, 2026, Patrick Witt, the executive director of the President’s Council of Advisers on Digital Assets, announced that the White House is prioritizing the security and accounting of its existing Bitcoin holdings before considering any new purchases for the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve. This decision comes as the U.S. government currently holds an estimated 319,000 to 328,000 Bitcoin, valued at approximately $26 to $28 billion based on market prices ranging from $82,000 to $83,000 per Bitcoin.
Witt indicated that no specific strategies for purchasing additional Bitcoin have been established, and there are no imminent policy changes or timelines for future acquisitions. Recent movements of over $1 billion worth of Bitcoin suggest that the government is consolidating its holdings into institutional-grade storage rather than preparing for liquidation. Most of these assets were acquired through forfeitures related to the Silk Road and Bitfinex hack cases.
The Strategic Bitcoin Reserve was established by an executive order on March 6, 2025, and is exclusively funded by forfeited Bitcoin, marking a shift from previous practices where seized Bitcoin was auctioned off. The current policy aims to maintain a budget-neutral approach, meaning any future acquisitions must not incur additional costs to taxpayers. As of now, no budget-neutral acquisition strategies have progressed beyond discussion, leaving the reserve as a holding operation rather than an active buyer in the market.
