ZKsync Launches Real-Time Prover Airbender, Vitalik Buterin Highlights Next Challenges
ZKsync has unveiled Airbender Prime, a groundbreaking Ethereum prover capable of generating proofs in real time using a single NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell GPU. Announced on October 13, 2026, the system demonstrated impressive performance by proving 99% of 7,200 Ethereum mainnet blocks in under 10 seconds, with all blocks verified within 12 seconds. This achievement positions Airbender Prime at the top of the ETHproofs.org public leaderboard for proving time, GPU efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin praised the speed milestone two days later, stating that the race for fast proving has been decisively won. However, he emphasized that the focus must now shift to ensuring the security and correctness of the prover, as well as establishing limits on prover costs relative to gas fees. Buterin's comments highlight the importance of formal verification to ensure that Airbender aligns with Ethereum's specifications.
Airbender Prime is part of ZKsync's broader strategy to enhance Ethereum's capabilities, following the earlier Atlas upgrade. Designed for efficient operation on commodity hardware, Airbender aims to support both institutional operators and independent participants across ZKsync's supported chains. The development of this prover marks a significant step in Ethereum's scaling efforts, as the community now looks forward to advancements in formal verification and potential competition from other zkEVM teams.
