Over $876 Million in Long Crypto Positions Liquidated in 24 Hours

On October 15, 2026, the cryptocurrency market experienced a significant downturn, resulting in the liquidation of over $876 million in long positions. This forced closure predominantly affected traders who had leveraged their bets on rising prices, particularly in Bitcoin and Ethereum, while short sellers largely remained unaffected.

The liquidation event saw approximately $850.1 million in total liquidations, with about $718 million stemming from long positions. Ethereum faced the largest losses, with liquidations estimated between $149 million and $265 million, while Bitcoin's liquidations ranged from $101 million to $212 million. The largest single liquidation was a $25.83 million long position in Bitcoin on the decentralized exchange Hyperliquid.

Binance was the primary exchange involved, accounting for 40% to 57% of the total liquidation volume, with Hyperliquid and Bybit also playing significant roles. Analysts noted that this episode was not linked to any macroeconomic changes or regulatory developments, but rather to a combination of general price weakness and excessive leverage in the market. This pattern of liquidation has been observed multiple times throughout 2026, suggesting that traders have been quick to rebuild their risk appetite despite previous losses.
